Aktiebolaget Spetsbergens Svenska Kolfält was a Swedish mining company operating on Svalbard under the territorial ambiguity that preceded the 1920 Svalbard Treaty — the archipelago had no formal sovereign until Norway assumed sovereignty under that agreement. Company scrip of this kind functioned as the only practical currency in remote Arctic mining settlements, where there were no banks, no postal services, and no accessible commercial infrastructure.
The LC suffix designates a specific plate or control series within the issue. Swedish Arctic mining scrip from this period survives in small numbers; the operating conditions alone — humidity, extreme cold, rough handling in company stores — were hard on paper.
