Denmark retained this small bronze denomination well past the point most Scandinavian countries had abandoned comparable low-value coins. Sweden dropped its 50-öre in 2010; Norway had already phased out its equivalent earlier. Denmark kept the 50 øre circulating until 2008, after which it was demonetized on October 1 of that year — meaning examples struck through the final years of the run were produced largely for collector sets rather than pocket change. The Nationalbanken's decision to discontinue it was driven by the coin's handling costs exceeding its face value.
