Peru's shift to the Nuevo Sol in 1991 was a direct response to the catastrophic hyperinflation of the Inti, which had depreciated so severely that the conversion rate was set at one million Intis to one Nuevo Sol. The Rome printing contract with IPZS reflected a deliberate move toward European security printing after the instability of the preceding years.
