Peru's shift to the Nuevo Sol in 1991 was itself a redenomination exercise — one Nuevo Sol replaced one million Intis, which had been consumed by hyperinflation that peaked at over 7,000 percent annually in 1990. The 50 Nuevo Sol denomination sits in the upper-middle range of a series designed to restore credibility to domestic currency after one of Latin America's more severe monetary collapses of the late twentieth century.
The BCRP printing its own notes in-house rather than contracting a specialist security printer like De La Rue or Giesecke & Devrient was an intentional policy choice, though the 1997 series carries only the basic watermark and thread — relatively modest security for the period.
