The Niños Héroes — the six military cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle against U.S. forces in September 1847 — had been a fixture of Mexican patriotic mythology long before this coin appeared. By the early 1990s the Banco de México was issuing a sustained series of bimetallic commemoratives pairing the brass ring format with substantial silver centers, threading collector appeal directly into the circulation framework. This denomination ran across three years of production under that program.
KM#571 is one of the heavier entries in the series, carrying a half-troy-ounce silver center in a format designed as much for the bullion market as for everyday use.
