The Henri IV type 50 Nouveaux Francs was introduced as part of the redenomination that took effect 1 January 1960, when de Gaulle's government lopped two zeros off the old franc — making 100 anciens francs equal to one nouveau franc. These notes were printed from 1959 in anticipation of the changeover, and the "nouveaux" designation was officially dropped in 1963 once the transition was considered complete.
Beltrand came from a distinguished engraving family; his grandfather Jacques-Beltrand was a noted printmaker, and the name carried genuine weight in French graphic arts circles. The series ran only four years before being superseded by the 1962 redesign.
