The "nouveaux francs" overprint series was a direct consequence of the de Gaulle government's 1960 redenomination, which converted 100 old francs to 1 nouveau franc across the entire French monetary system — Algeria included, though the territory was already three years into an independence war that would end French administration entirely by 1962. Notes like this one were effectively issued into a disappearing economy.
