The Isle of Man's decimal coinage was introduced in 1971 alongside the United Kingdom's decimalisation, but the island — as a Crown dependency — issued its own distinct series rather than adopting British coins. This gave the Manx government unusual latitude in design choice, and they exercised it aggressively across the entire set. The 50p denomination saw continuous reissue through 1975 as the government worked through initial demand following the changeover from the Manx pound shilling-and-pence system.
KM#24 is distinguished from near-contemporary British 50p issues by the Pobjoy Mint striking contract, which the Isle of Man used rather than the Royal Mint.
