The Series D 50 New Pence was designed by Harry Eccleston but never formally issued — the denomination was abandoned before entering circulation, making surviving specimens genuinely rare institutional curiosities rather than mainstream collectibles. The Bank of England Printing Works produced the notes, and examples that escaped destruction did so through official channels, typically as archival or presentation pieces rather than through any leak in the supply chain.
Decimal transition planning in the UK began well before Decimal Day in February 1971, and several denomination prototypes were produced and then quietly shelved as the issuing strategy was revised. The 50p coin, introduced in 1969, effectively pre-empted the banknote equivalent.
