Bhutan's 1966 decimal coinage — of which this piece is part — marked the country's first serious step toward a modern monetary system, issued just as the kingdom began cautious engagement with international institutions following decades of near-total isolation. The "Naya Paisa" denomination itself was borrowed directly from India's own decimal terminology introduced in 1957, reflecting Bhutan's deep monetary dependence on its southern neighbor at the time.
Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third Druk Gyalpo, died in 1972 before Bhutan joined the United Nations — an organization he had worked to enter.
