Cyprus's 1955 coinage series was introduced just as the EOKA campaign for enosis — union with Greece — was gaining violent momentum, making this issue one of the most politically charged decimal coinages of the postwar British Commonwealth. The coins were produced at the Royal Mint for a crown colony that would achieve independence only five years later, in 1960.
The series marked Cyprus's first decimal currency system, replacing the earlier piastre-based coinage.
