To the left, a large ornate medallion carries the decree inscription within a multi-layered rosette border, flanked by panels of fine engine-turned latticework. To the right, the denomination numeral "50" is set in bold open letters within a circular guilloche vignette, with the printer's imprint running along the lower margin. |

The Banco dos Estados Unidos do Brazil was one of several private banks granted sweeping note-issuing privileges under the Encilhamento — the speculative financial boom that followed Brazil's transition to a republic in 1889. The policy, pushed by Finance Minister Rui Barbosa, flooded the economy with paper credit and ultimately contributed to severe inflation and a cascade of institutional failures through the early 1890s. This bank did not survive the decade.
The American Bank Note Company's New York plant handled the printing, as it did for a substantial portion of Brazilian private bank paper from this period. The "1st. Print" designation distinguishes this issue from subsequent printings with altered serial or color specifications.
