The Banco do Brazil referenced here is not the modern institution of that name — it is the second bank to carry the title, chartered in 1851 after the first had collapsed in 1829 under the weight of over-issuance and public distrust. This 1857 emission belongs to its second note series, issued during a period of relative monetary stability under the Empire, when Brazilian coffee revenues were expanding and the bank held quasi-monopoly status on note issue in Rio de Janeiro.
