Giesecke & Devrient had printed Mozambican currency since the early post-independence period, and this 2006 issue continued that relationship. The 50 Meticais denomination was introduced as part of the redenominated metical series — the new metical replaced the old at a rate of 1000:1, a reform enacted in 2006 to clean up the inflationary damage accumulated since the civil war ended in 1992.
The redenomination was purely cosmetic in monetary terms but carried real psychological weight in a country where 100,000-metical notes had become routine grocery-run currency.
