Obverse description Single-colour red-brown letterpress note with a bold Fraktur-style border inscription running along all four margins. At left, a tall vignette shows a sword entwined with foliage and a bird perched at the top, rendered in a woodcut-like style. The denomination '50' appears at upper right within a decorative guilloche rosette, accompanied by a serial number, below which the issuing authority text reads 'ANWEISUNG AUF DEN KREIS STEINBURG ÜBER' above the large denomination legend 'FÜNFZIG MARK' in bold display type. The lower portion carries a validity clause, the date 'Itzehoe, 12. Nov. 1918', and three manuscript signatures on behalf of the Kreisausschuss des Kreises Steinburg.

Reverse description Plain red-brown letterpress reverse with four large ornamental '50' numerals occupying the corners, each enclosed within elaborate decorative cartouches filled with floral and geometric motifs. Two rectangular guilloche panels of repeating '50' numerals fill the centre top and centre bottom registers, creating a dense geometric underprint pattern. The central band carries the bold display legend 'KREIS STEINBURG' in large block capitals, dominating the entire width of the note.

Steinburg is a district in Holstein, and like hundreds of German administrative bodies in late 1918, its Kreisausschuss issued emergency Notgeld to compensate for the acute shortage of Reichsbank currency during the final chaotic weeks of the war. The printer, J. Augustin of Glückstadt, was a local firm — Glückstadt sits within the district itself, which is unusual; most comparable issues went to larger commercial printers in Hamburg or Berlin.

The designer credit to Wenz. Aug. Habuik suggests commissioned artwork rather than a generic stock design, which was not universal at this denomination level for 1918 district issues.
