The Litt. D designation marks this as the fourth letter variant of the 1939 50 Markkaa series — Suomen Pankki issued successive letter suffixes as print runs were exhausted and new serial number ranges opened, a Finnish practice that helps date production batches within a single nominal year. This particular issue was printed entirely in-house at the Bank of Finland's own setelipaino, one of the few central banks in Europe at the time with fully internalized note production.
The timing matters: Finland entered the Winter War against the Soviet Union in November 1939, and notes from this year circulated under wartime conditions almost immediately after printing.
