The Litt. B designation marks a second printing of the wartime 50 Markkaa type, issued as Finland was navigating the brutal economic aftermath of the Continuation War — reparations to the Soviet Union were already consuming a significant share of national output, and inflationary pressure was acute. The Bank of Finland's own printing facility in Helsinki handled production throughout the series, which was unusual for Finnish notes of this era; earlier issues had routinely gone abroad to foreign security printers.
The Litt. A and Litt. B printings are distinguished primarily by serial letter prefixes, not by major plate differences — a detail that trips up collectors working from incomplete census data.
