During the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, German municipalities, businesses, and private publishers flooded circulation with Notgeld — emergency money issued to fill the void left by worthless Reichsmarks and chronic coin shortages. Verlag Die Stimme vom Rhein was a Cologne publishing house, and like many commercial enterprises of the period, it issued its own scrip as both a practical necessity and, frankly, a marketing vehicle. Collector-oriented Notgeld was a genuine commercial phenomenon: the public bought and hoarded attractive series, which kept them out of circulation and cost the issuer almost nothing to redeem.
