Bielefeld's silk and linen notgeld issues of 1922 occupy a peculiar niche in emergency currency history — produced from locally sourced fabric because paper was either unavailable or considered too fragile for sustained circulation during the hyperinflationary spiral. The Stadtsparkasse series was among the more formally administered of these issues, with hand-applied signatures giving individual notes at least a nominal claim to official accountability. E. Gundlach, a Bielefeld printing house, handled production locally, which kept the logistics manageable when central supply chains were unreliable.
Silk examples survive in higher numbers than their linen counterparts from the same series, largely because silk resisted the mechanical wear of pocket and till use far better than paper ever could.
