Bielefeld's silk and linen notgeld issues from 1922 are among the most technically unusual emergency currency produced during the Weimar inflation period. The Stadtsparkasse commissioned E. Gundlach — a local printing firm already supplying the city's textile industry with labels and packaging — to produce notes on actual woven silk fabric rather than paper. The logic was partly anti-counterfeiting, partly a bet that fabric would outlast the hyperinflationary chaos that was destroying paper notes almost as fast as they could be printed.
The "with signatures" designation distinguishes hand-signed examples from machine-stamped ones in the same series — a meaningful distinction for collectors, as the signed versions represent earlier production runs.
