Comments

Bavarian district notgeld from the immediate post-WWI period, issued when central government currency had effectively ceased to function reliably at the local level. Bezirksamt Sonthofen was the administrative district; Immenstadt, a small market town in the Allgäu, was the practical issuing center. The denomination is unusually high for a district-level emergency issue of this date — most comparable Bavarian notgeld from early 1919 ran to 1 or 2 Mark.

The official stamp is the only security feature, which was standard for hastily authorized district issues and made counterfeiting trivially easy — a known problem acknowledged in contemporary Bavarian state correspondence about the notgeld proliferation.
