| Obverse description | Smooth firm paper with a light blue and dark blue bicolour underprint on cream stock. The left panel carries the large denomination numeral '50' above the inscription 'MARK / NOTGELD / MARKT BERCHTESGADEN' in bold letterpress within a dark crosshatched background. The right panel presents a detailed intaglio-style vignette of the Berchtesgaden market square as seen through a stone archway, with a central ornamental fountain in the foreground and a row of historic townhouses in the background, signed 'REINBOLD' in the lower right of the vignette. The entire design is framed by a fine ochre-gold border. |

Berchtesgaden's 1922 notgeld issue belongs to the late wave of German municipal emergency currency, by which point many towns had shifted from purely utilitarian scrip to notes with genuine artistic ambition. A. Reinbold's involvement suggests local commission — this wasn't a generic run pulled from a printer's catalogue. The watermarked paper is notable for municipal notgeld of this type; most small-town issuers dispensed with security features entirely, relying on the impracticality of counterfeiting low-denomination regional scrip.
