TurkmenAlem 52°E launched in April 2015 as Turkmenistan's first national communications satellite, placed into geostationary orbit at 52 degrees east longitude aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral. The program was a signature prestige project of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, framed as proof of the country's technological independence — though the satellite itself was built by Thales Alenia Space in France and launched by an American rocket.
The coin was issued the same year as the launch, part of a broader gold commemorative program through which Turkmenistan has documented state achievements in precious metal.
