Turkmenistan introduced the manat as its national currency in November 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble at a rate of 500 rubles to one manat — a practical severance from Moscow's monetary system in the chaotic post-independence years. The second manat, redenominated in 2009 at 5,000 old manats to one new, reset the currency ahead of the gas export boom that would define the following decade.
This commemorative marks the twenty-year point from that 1993 introduction. Struck in 22-karat gold at just under 40 grams, output was tightly controlled and intended primarily for collectors rather than gifts of state.
