The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, proclaimed in May 1918, was the first parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world — a fact the Azerbaijani government has leaned on heavily in its centennial commemorations. The republic lasted just under two years before the Red Army absorbed it into Soviet territory in April 1920.
