Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Lesotho's founding, this coin commemorates Moshoeshoe I, the Basotho chief who consolidated disparate clans into a coherent nation during the Difaqane — the period of widespread chaos and displacement triggered by Zulu expansion in the 1820s. His political acumen included the strategically calculated request for British protectorate status in 1868, a move that kept Basutoland from absorption into the Cape Colony and ultimately preserved the territory that became independent Lesotho in 1966.
The series was struck by the Pobjoy Mint under contract — a common arrangement for small-nation commemorative programs of this period.
