Lithuania issued this coin ahead of the 2012 London Olympics while still years away from adopting the euro, making it one of the last Olympic commemoratives struck under the litas — a currency that would be discontinued entirely in January 2015. The Lithuanian Mint had a limited domestic collector base, so most of these pieces were sold directly to foreign dealers and thematic Olympic collectors rather than through Lithuanian retail channels.
KM#220 was struck to the same planchet specification shared across dozens of Commonwealth and European commemorative programs of the period, sourced largely through the same small network of blank suppliers.
