The Pazaislis Monastery outside Kaunas was founded in the 1660s under Grand Chancellor Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, who brought Camaldolese monks from Italy and commissioned what became the largest Baroque architectural complex in Lithuania. Construction stretched across decades and drew Italian craftsmen whose frescoed interiors remain largely intact. The monastery passed through Russian Orthodox control during the imperial period and served as a psychiatric hospital under the Soviets — a history that makes its post-independence restoration a specifically Lithuanian recovery story, not merely an architectural one.
KM#139 is part of a broader commemorative silver program the Bank of Lithuania ran through the 2000s documenting national heritage sites.
