Medininkai Castle, built in the 14th century by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, is the largest surviving Gothic castle on Lithuanian territory — and also the site of one of the most notorious crimes of the Soviet collapse. In July 1991, Lithuanian border guards stationed there were massacred by Soviet OMON forces, killing seven officers just months before Lithuania's independence was internationally recognized. The castle and the massacre together occupy an uncomfortable dual place in national memory.
This coin is part of Lithuania's ongoing architectural heritage series launched after EU accession candidacy brought renewed institutional interest in documenting national monuments.
