Kęrnave, the site honored by this issue, served as one of the earliest capitals of the medieval Lithuanian state before being sacked and burned by the Teutonic Knights in 1365. The settlement was never rebuilt as a functioning town. UNESCO inscribed the Kęrnave Archaeological Site as a World Heritage Site in 2004 — the year immediately preceding this coin's release — making the timing deliberate.
