Malta's 1972 specimen issues were produced shortly after the island's transition to a republic, with the Central Bank established in 1968 to replace the Currency Board that had operated under British colonial arrangements. Specimen strikings from this period were distributed primarily to other central banks and currency institutions rather than entering commercial circulation.
The choice of Neptune reflects Malta's deep maritime identity — the Grand Harbour had been one of the Mediterranean's most strategically contested anchorages for centuries. A copper 50 Liri, however, is an unusual pairing of a high face value with a base metal, suggesting this was always intended as a presentation or proof-of-concept piece rather than a circulating denomination.
