Italy's gold 50 Lire of this period was struck under the Fascist regime's aggressive monetary posturing — Mussolini had famously pegged the lira at "Quota 90" against the pound sterling in 1927, a deflationary move that caused widespread economic hardship but which he framed as a nationalist triumph. The gold coinage of 1931–33 existed largely as a prestige exercise; actual gold circulation had effectively ended years earlier.
KM#71 is known in relatively small total mintages across its three-year run, with 1933 being the scarcest date by a considerable margin.
