Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish Republic, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on October 29, 1923. The commemorative program that year was notably modest given the scale of the occasion — Turkey's economy was under strain from the global oil shock, and the government's capacity for elaborate numismatic output was limited.
