The Mediterranean Games have been held every four years since 1951, organized under the International Committee of Mediterranean Games with participation from nations bordering the sea. Turkey hosted the games in Mersin in 2013 — the first time the country had hosted since the inaugural 1951 edition in Alexandria — and the Darphane issued this coin as part of the official commemorative program tied directly to that hosting obligation.
