Turkey's chronic inflation through the 1980s rendered lower denominations increasingly worthless, and the 50 Lira — worth roughly a fraction of a US cent by the time production ended — was already an anachronism when it entered circulation. The government's inability to stabilize the lira during this period meant denominations escalated rapidly; within a decade, coins of this face value had been effectively replaced by notes, then by coins of vastly higher denomination.
