Reverse description The reverse bears a detailed relief depiction of the Madara Rider (Мадарски конник), a celebrated early medieval rock carving of UNESCO World Heritage status, carved on a cliff face near the village of Madara in northeastern Bulgaria. The mounted warrior is shown in right profile astride a rearing horse, driving a spear downward into a lion prostrate beneath the horse's hooves — a composition symbolizing imperial triumph and martial sovereignty of the early Bulgarian rulers. An eagle in flight appears above the rider, completing the heraldic composition faithful in style and iconography to the original 8th-century relief.
