Bulgaria entered World War II on the Axis side in March 1941, and by 1943 the country's economy was straining under wartime demands. The shift to nickel-plated steel for this issue — replacing the earlier nickel composition of KM#48 — was a direct consequence of strategic metal conservation, mirroring similar substitutions across Axis and Allied minting programs alike.
Boris III died in August 1943, within weeks of returning from a meeting with Hitler, under circumstances that remain disputed. Coins bearing his effigy were struck that same year.
