| Opmerkingen |
Bulgaria's postwar finances in the early 1920s were dire — the country had backed the losing side in both Balkan Wars and the First World War, leaving it under crushing reparations imposed by the Treaty of Neuilly. This 50 Leva was issued amid that fiscal pressure, part of a broader effort to stabilize a currency that had lost most of its prewar purchasing power.
The commission of Bulgarian artists — Bozhinov, Denev, and Shturkelov — to supply original designs was deliberate policy, not coincidence. Bradbury Wilkinson executed the engraving and printing in Britain, but the visual program was authored domestically, reflecting a push for national artistic expression in official instruments at a time when Bulgarian cultural identity was politically charged.
