Obverse description Central field depicts a front-facing architectural rendering of the Bank of Sierra Leone building, rendered in fine relief with horizontal banding details and a colonnaded entrance. The building is framed within a dotted inner border following the octagonal shape of the coin. The legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 50 LEONES and the date 1996 appear in the lower field below the building motif. Additional information

The 1996 date places this coin squarely in the middle of Sierra Leone's catastrophic civil war, which had been grinding since 1991 under the RUF insurgency. Coin production under those conditions was largely a formality — the economy had fragmented to the point where formal currency played a diminishing role in daily exchange across much of the country.
