Reverse description Central field features a facing bust portrait of Sir Henry Lightfoot-Boston, first Governor-General of Sierra Leone, depicted wearing academic dress including a mortarboard cap and gown, rendered in moderate relief. The portrait is contained within a dotted inner border following the octagonal coin shape. The legend SIR HENRY LIGHTFOOT-BOSTON curves along the upper periphery, and the denomination FIFTY LEONES appears along the lower border. Small decorative devices flank the inner frame at the left and right.

Additional information

The 1996 date places this coin squarely in the middle of Sierra Leone's catastrophic civil war, which had been grinding since 1991 under the RUF insurgency. Coin production under those conditions was largely a formality — the economy had fragmented to the point where formal currency played a diminishing role in daily exchange across much of the country.
