Oberthur Fiduciaire printed Honduras's cotton-paper issues for much of the early 2000s before the Central Bank began migrating denominations to polymer — a transition that stalled repeatedly due to cost disputes and public resistance. This 50 Lempira issue from the 2012–2014 window falls squarely in that limbo period, when the bank was running parallel security paper and polymer programs across different denominations simultaneously.
The optically variable ink on this series was a late addition to the specification, introduced after counterfeit pressure on the 50 Lempira value increased noticeably in the late 2000s.
