Jeronim de Rada (1814–1903) was the central figure of the Arbëreshë literary and nationalist movement — an ethnic Albanian community settled in southern Italy since the 15th century. A poet and journalist working in Calabria, he spent decades pushing for Albanian linguistic recognition and national consciousness at a time when there was no Albanian state to speak of. This coin was issued in his centenary death year.
