Albania issued a small series of palladium patterns in 1986, almost certainly intended for the international numismatic market rather than any genuine monetary purpose — the country's isolationist Hoxha government had by that point severed ties with virtually every major trading partner, leaving no plausible export audience for a precious-metal commemorative. Palladium was an unusual choice even by pattern standards; most socialist-bloc experimental strikes of the period used silver or gold.
Durazzo is the Italian name for Durrës, the ancient port city founded by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC.
