Additional information

Albania's post-communist monetary reconstruction moved slowly, and the 50 Lekë denomination sat in an awkward middle position throughout the 1990s — large enough to matter during the inflationary pressures following the 1997 pyramid scheme collapse, which wiped out roughly two-thirds of Albania's GDP and triggered an armed insurrection that killed some 2,000 people. Coins of this period circulated in a country that had briefly descended into near-anarchy.
