Additional information

Răciula Monastery, founded in the late 18th century in Călărași district, was suppressed under Soviet rule and its monastic community dissolved — a fate shared by virtually every religious house in the Moldavian SSR. The commemorative program Moldova launched around independence leaned heavily on ecclesiastical subjects precisely because the Church had been so systematically erased from public life for decades.

KM#89 was struck at the Monetăria Statului in Bucharest under contract, as Moldova has never operated its own mint.
