Dosoftei, Metropolitan of Moldavia from 1671 to 1686, is credited with producing the first printed book in the Romanian language — a versified psalter published in Iași in 1673. He was forced into exile in Poland following the Ottoman-backed deposal of Moldavian prince Constantin Cantemir, and died in Żółkiew in 1693, never returning to Moldavia. The commemorative program of which this coin is part reflects Moldova's post-Soviet effort to anchor national identity in pre-Phanariot Orthodox and literary heritage rather than in the more contested Russophone or Romanian nationalist frameworks.
