Mihai Volontir, the Moldovan actor this coin commemorates, was best known across the Soviet Union for his lead role in the 1979 television serial Țiganii and as Budulai in the adaptation of Kalinin's novels — productions that gave him a following well beyond Moldova's borders. He died in 2015, and this issue appeared four years later as part of the National Bank's ongoing cultural figures series.
