Dosoftei, born 1624 in northeastern Moldova, was the metropolitan who produced the first printed book in the Romanian language written in verse — his 1673 Psaltirea în versuri, a psalter rendered entirely in rhyming Romanian rather than Church Slavonic. That choice was a deliberate cultural and linguistic assertion at a moment when Slavonic still dominated Orthodox liturgical life across the region. He spent his final years in exile in Zółkiew after the 1686 Ottoman-backed displacement, dying far from the metropolitanate he had reshaped.
