Mărțișor is a Romanian and Moldovan spring tradition of disputed but likely Dacian or Roman origin, in which small talismans tied with red-and-white cord are gifted on the first of March. Moldova submitted the tradition for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage inscription in 2017, receiving recognition alongside Romania, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia — a rare instance of four countries sharing a single cultural listing. The National Bank of Moldova has made seasonal and cultural commemoratives a consistent part of its numismatic program; this silver issue falls squarely within that pattern.
