Ion Neculce was an 18th-century Moldavian chronicler and boyar whose O samă de cuvinte — a collection of oral traditions and legends prefacing his chronicle — remains one of the foundational texts of Romanian-language literature. He served as hatman under Dimitrie Cantemir and fled with him into Russian exile following the disastrous Ottoman rout at the Battle of Stănilești in 1711, an event Neculce witnessed firsthand and recorded with unusual personal candor.
His birth year of 1672 is itself approximate, reconstructed from chronicle evidence rather than any surviving record.
